Hornsby Model Engineers Co-Op Ltd - Galston Valley Railway

A Model Engineering Club, nestled in the bushlands on the outskirts of Galston (in the Hornsby Shire, NSW). A picturesque miniature railway, with 1km of track winding throughout the bush and up the hills.

Events - Information for Visiting Model Engineers



We welcome guests with locos or traction engines or stationary engines on our Public Running Days, which are the 2nd Sunday of every month (see Public Timetables for dates). But please note that we have a limited capacity for freight trains on Public days - if you are not pulling passengers please check with us beforehand.





Diesel Day (D-Day)

Every year we run a Diesel Day for Diesel & electric outline locomotives only. This is a relaxed inter-club running day, with plenty of opportunities to compare notes and chat. Lunch and morning and afternoon tea are provided. Members of other AALS affiliated clubs are welcome.
Our Gauge 1 track will also be available for battery-powered diesel outline locomotives.

Our next Diesel Day will be June 2025

Please note our track rules, and in particular that we maintain a minimum age of 7 years for operators (persons 7-17 years inclusive must be under the direct supervision of a competent adult at all times).

Sorry - no public admission on D-Day.




Galston 500

The Galston 500 is an annual event in which teams complete a combined total of 500 laps of our 1 km track. Members of AALS Affiliated Clubs are invitesd to sign up for this event and participate in the challenge!

The next Galston 500 event will be 31st August 2024.

Members of the public are most welcome to come to the Galston 500.
Rides will be available between 10 am and 3 pm.

All proceeds go towards Multiple Sclerosis research at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research





October Birthday Weekend


All visiting model engineers are welcome to our traditional October Birthday Weekend, 11th - 13th October 2024.

Limited facilities for camping and cooking exist. If you need local motel or caravan park accomodation, please contact us for advice.

  • We welcome all Members of other AALS affiliated clubs
  • Running is possible all day on Friday and Saturday from 7 am, with a night run both days (to around 10 pm) if you wish (suitable lights required)
  • We have 5" gauge and gauge 1 only
  • Char, compressed air and 12 VDC are available
  • A current boiler certificate is required
  • Our site is locked overnight, and some members stay all night
  • Lunch and morning/afternoon tea is provided on Friday and Saturday
  • Sunday 13th October is our public running day - you are welcome to help
  • Our traction engine track is available for use
  • We have an extensive display of stationary models, models in progress etc - you are welcome to contribute
